Responses to climate change

Watch Professor John Barrett’s and Paul Chatterton’s videos about how people are responding to climate change now carbon budgets.

Professor John Barrett is chair in Sustainability Research.  His research interests include sustainable consumption and production modelling, carbon accounting and exploring the transition to a low carbon pathway. He is Co-Director of the UK Energy Research Centre, leading research on the relationship between economic growth and energy demand.  A lead advisor to Defra, he was commissioned to lead on understanding the carbon footprint of trade.  He was a lead author for the IPCC 5th Assessment for Working Group 3.  John has appeared regularly on Radio 4 news and discussion programmes and written numerous policy reports on Sustainable Consumption and Production issues for a wide range of audiences.

Professor Paul Chatterton is an educator, writer, researcher and campaigner who is Professor of Urban Futures in the School of Geography. He is currently Director of the University’s Sustainable Cities Group which has launched the ground breaking MSc Sustainable Cities. Paul is also co-founder and resident of the award-winning low impact housing co-operative LILAC. He has gone forward to set up Leeds Community Homes to help promote community-led housing. His recent books include Low Impact Living (ask us for a discount code!) and Unlocking Sustainable Cities  He is also co-founder of the public charity ‘Antipode’ dedicated to research and scholarship in radical geography and an associate editor of the journal ‘City’.  Paul has helped pioneer methodological work in participatory geographies with action-oriented methods and a strong collaborative element and was involved in developing the 2019 Leeds Citizens Jury on climate change which helped to inform Leeds City Council’s Climate Emergency Plan.
