On a collective level, people can join civil society organisations (such as “Diversity matters”) to celebrate and appreciate our cultural diversity (including ‘what we have in common’ and ‘where we are different’). To combat racism and xenophobia in communities (and in the media), people can join campaign groups, like “Stand Up to Racism”. Through participating in collective action and dialogue, people can actively encourage change in attitudes and promote positive change.
Individuals standing up to racism can have a big ripple effect. People can support “newcomers” in their neighbourhoods and make them feel welcomed through volunteering for local community groups (e.g. organising cultural festivals/events). We can also find out more by listening to the voices of people from other communities (such as books/podcasts by black and brown authors) and develop appreciation of (multiple) perspectives from other cultures.
